I am a commercial barrister and a nationally accredited mediator based in Sydney, Australia. The essence of my mediation skills has been honed through real-world practice, having conducted over a thousand mediations since 2009.

As a lawyer from a traditional legal family, I initially had little faith in mediation or any ADR process. Instead, I believed in legal arguments, evidence, and justice through the court system.

However, during my master’s studies, I was challenged to consider the possibility that mediation might be a more effective way to resolve conflicts. Even though I was skeptical, I felt an instinctive urge to explore this concept. Consequently, in 2009, I began working as a family, property, and civil dispute resolution mediator.

From 2009 to 2013, I encountered a diverse range of individuals and disputes—both volunteer and court-ordered—that were challenging to manage and resolve. By trying various approaches, I discovered that when the parties are adequately supported, including their lawyers, all aspects of the dispute are thoroughly and non-judgmentally explored. Moreover, when there is an opportunity for the parties to listen to one another, even in the most challenging situations, they can resolve conflicts and create something beneficial for everyone involved. This experience taught me that the heat of conflict, when skillfully managed, can forge opportunities for mutual gain. Over time, my mediation style evolved to settle disputes and enable parties to create new opportunities that benefit everyone involved.

In 2013, I started my private mediation practice. The approach proved especially effective for businesses, leading to solutions that often exceeded disputants' expectations. The more I mediated, the more I witnessed the parties' incredible potential to achieve remarkable achievements through tailored mediation. The process empowers parties and their legal representatives to attain brave and creative solutions that are sustainable and create wealth for them and their business environments.

 As a barrister, I am privileged to engage in complex commercial, building, and construction litigation. However, in my experience, litigation reduces a complex conflict into some age-old legal concepts, evidence and a win-lose contest, prioritising a third-party idea of justice over practical resolutions. Whether you win or lose, throughout the process, all parties have lost many opportunities, relationships, and money, and the overall experience is disempowering.

My experience is that 95% of the litigated matters can be avoided by putting some effort and attention into mediation. My mediation process is designed to give that service to the disputant parties.
